Feng Shui tips for a happy home ☯🥰

Feng Shui is an ancient Eastern art form concerned with understanding and improving the feeling of a room or space. Feng Shui is based on the idea that our environment carries and stores energy. According to the principles of Feng Shui, making some small changes around your home environment can improve the mood of your home.

While the scientific basis for Feng Shui is debated, many people believe that arranging their environment according to Feng Shui principles can lead to various benefits. Some of the commonly believed benefits of a Feng Shui house comprise:

  • Positive Energy Flow
  • Improved Health and Well-being
  • Enhanced Relationships
  • Increased Prosperity
  • Better Sleep
  • Boosted Creativity and Productivity
  • Clutter Reduction
  • Enhanced Overall Mood
  • Improved Concentration
  • Supportive Environment

Sound interesting? This article explores some simple Feng Shui tips to try at your place (in no particular order).

Creating harmony through Feng Shui

According to Chinese belief, chi (pronounced chee) flows everywhere around us, as well as through our bodies. The practice of Feng Shui involves creating an environment through which chi can flow. Blockages are removed and spaces are opened up in an effort create a harmonious balance of energy. When chi gets blocked or held up, relationships may be impacted, finances may be poor or health may be impacted.

Chi can also move too rapidly – and you make feel like your resources are constantly being washed away or you’re your projects are going down the drain. A healthy flow of chi invites health, wealth and happiness- what the Chinese call the Three Great Blessings.

Let it flow

Energy is believed to be able to become trapped and stale in rooms that are not regularly used. Try to walk through or turn a light on in an unused room at least every couple of days. Another solution is to keep a plant in unused rooms. Tending to the plant will prompt you to enter the room and stimulate positivity. Keeping thoroughfares, halls, passages and stairs clean and free of clutter enables energy to move well around the home. Shifting bags, boxes and equipment out of these spaces and storing them effectively well help you ensure a sense of order, as well as reducing your risk of trips and falls.

Clean and tidy homes

Actions that involve cleaning and taking care of your home also improve the energy. Cleaning out a fireplace or wood oven is good for the safe operation of the heater and improves vitality and good luck. Repairing broken furniture or fixing cracks in the walls can help improve relationships between those who live in the house. Clearing away cobwebs is one of the simplest but most effective actions you can undertake- cobwebs can trap negative energy and are symbolic of the past. Invite fresh new energy in by removing dust and cobwebs from your home.

Clear the clutter

According to Feg Shui, old newspapers, quiz books and magazines can cause you to feel a little stuck in the past. Get rid of old publications you no longer read to enable new ideas and information to enter your home. Put old photographs into albums to enjoy looking through happy thoughts and memories. Another way you can help clear up stale energy is to return any borrowed items to their rightful owners. This can help freshen up the energy and relieve you of any guilt about having kept something that belongs to someone else for too long.

Magical mirror

Mirrors are very useful to open up spaces, direct energy or increase the power of a symbolic object or item. Mirrors can be positioned to deflect unwanted energy and invite more desirable energy in. Many Chinese families use a mirror above an exterior door to deflect street noise or other disturbances away from the home.

If you have a room with a missing corner or irregular shape, you may be missing out on financial opportunities or income. Hanging a mirror in the missing corner or section can turn this luck around, the mirror acting as a symbolic window that opens opportunities for you. Hanging a mirror in an area of work or study helps protect you and enables you to see anyone entering your workspaces without having to turn around.

Feng Shui in the garden

Getting active in your garden can be good for your body and mind. Taking care of plants encourages your health too! Weeds in the garden are believed to choke growth and can limit happiness so get rid of them when you can. A balance of energies can be achieved in your garden by installing items that reference the five elements of the system. Your plants represent wood. Stones or clay pots can represent earth, while a pond or birdbath can be used to represent water. Use lanterns or solar lights to represent fire and some pretty wind chimes for metal.

Tips for your bedroom

To create a comfortable and peaceful bedroom, leave the bedroom door open during the day, enabling energy to move in and out. The same goes for shutters and blinds- where possible, keep them raised during the day. However, if your room has an ensuite or entry to a bathroom – keep that door closed at all times. This prevents positive energy from running down the drain. It is not recommended that you place a TV in your bedroom, because it is thought to bring in energy from the outside world. A TV can distract energy and balance in the bedroom. If you have no other options for the TV, then consider covering it with a pretty cloth when not in use.

Home decor tips

Fittings and furnishings can also be used to great effect. Selecting fabrics with different textures can create harmony- velvet and wool can hold onto warmth and comfort. Round rugs symbolise harmony, while rectangular ones can encourage growth.

Choose paintings and pictures carefully. Images can impact your feelings without you even being aware of it and can influence you at a subconscious level. Display photographs and prints that bring you pleasure or happy memories. You may prefer to keep bold and bright artworks in the living and shared rooms, while more peaceful images and calmer colours belong in the bedroom. Use wooden frames where possible.

Although the practice of Feng Shui has been around for thousands of years, very little research has been conducted into its overall effectiveness. However, many of the principles described here are akin to the ideas of interior design, and make good sense regardless of if you believe in the existence of chi. Why not make some changes, clear the clutter and see how you feel as a result!
